It’s almost here! The Lync Mobile Client for Windows Phone,
Android, Blackberry and iphone, Symbian, etc. as previously rumored will be
released ion just a couple of short weeks !
Microsoft Lync.. Yep finally! We can take Lync ANYWHERE!
Now may be a very good time to consider implementing SIP over TCP,
dropping SIP over UDP. While Lync and your mobile clients are secure as secure
can be, SIP over UDP is not. This applies to any phone system using sip over
UDP.
There is a nasty and dishonest statement I hear from telco
providers which is “You need to use sip over UDP because sip over tcp is
not dependable… BULLSH*^* !! It IS very dependable. I am using Intelepeer’s (
www.intelepeer.com ) SIP service, and
not one have I EVER had a dropped call. TCP supports more than udp does and is
very much more secure than UDP. (Perhaps a blog on why your communications
vendor is stretching the truth is in order?? I mean.. Doesn’t Cisco Hardware
primary preference TCP and NOT UDP? Why yes.. I do believe so….)
Oh yes.. I also dropped $1000 off my monthly phone bill just on
one PRI… That is 12 grand a year… Yes.. I am personally recommending
Intelepeer.. (Yes I pay them full price for my service) Never had an issue with them, no echo, no dropped
calls, and native Lync support… Anyway… moving on…..
The
Lync mobile client will allow you to view colleagues’ availability and select the
best way to communicate whether it is IM, email, or a phone call.
Your Lync mobile will also report back your status to other users.
Think of it as simply a wireless phone from your desk, with all the Lync client
goodness!
The communication channel is encrypted, TLS is supported, and full
perimeter protection is there.. Your calls and communication from the Lync
system and client are secured…
Calls will be simple. Because there will be just your primary
number for Lync your mobile will truly act as an extension of your desk phone, making
it easier for partners, friends, family, and your colleagues to recognize your
call through single identity.
You will be able to single click into conferences and because the
device is authenticated, you will not have to micro input passwords, conference
ID’s,lonnnggg codes, etc. when conferencing through Lync with your mobile
client. (Oh Yeah!!! )
So bring it on!!! I just implemented Lync 2010 Enterprise in September with one
friend, and the implementation was brainless.. It was so, beyond easy… We
used ( of course ) Hyper-V, and have Edge on one box, and all other components
on another box. We standardized desk phones and went with Polycom’s CX-600 (true line speed) gigabit port, so we saved
one data drop (cost) per office….
Lync will change the way we do business as a multiple listing
service and a membership corporation, and I could not be more pleased with the
product performance, and quality of communications…
More later from just a geek… @Brian_Bell ww.ageekblog.com

Great article and definitely just as excited about the Lync Mobile client as you are. I have to disagree with your statement about SIP over TCP vs UDP. There is a time and a place for both and I don’t think I have ever heard any Telco talk about audio quality when it comes to one versus the other. It simply comes down to overhead of TCP vs UDP. UDP is far more efficient and within a Tier 1 carrier network it is unlikely that they would want to use TCP for this reason. Over thousands and thousands of calls with media and signaling you add significant load utilizing TCP.
Intelepeer provides a fantastic service by the way. Great call on the service provider.
